Three things bother me. 1. Taxes. Only consumers pay taxes. Businesses do not pay taxes. All cost of doing business are passed on in the goods or services provided. 2. Bailouts. People should not be bailout when they make bad choices. Hopefully, your parents did not bail you out everytime you made a bad decision. If it does not affect life or limb, let them learn from their misstakes. 3. Credit. I am 67 years old, so I remember when there was no easy credit. People saved their money and then bought the item or used layaway. Even the old Sears EZ pay required 10% down with each purchase. If all credit was frozen for a full year, we would all survive. As a matter of fact, we would all be better off at the end of the year. John Retired IRS Agent

What bothers me is the attitude of so many well off financial types and politicians that they want the banks to stop paying dividends if they accept the governments buy into their companies. How is this going to help the economy? I and a whole lot of others that saved and invested for retirement are dependent on the dividends as a primary suppliment to the megar Social Security payments. If I sell the stocks that are so deflated I will have nothing. I do not trust politicians, and having lawyers write financial rules really scares me.

What worries me is I have been researching on the internet and I can not find where Obama has said clearly that his tax plan for small business is on the net not the gross. I have seen many other small business owners asking for the same information. No one in the dems will come out and show us where Obama has said net. Also, what the fine will be for businesses that do not provide medical for their employees. The wrong answer on either of these will put my two small businesses out of busiess. I am 62 I can not start over again. I was told MSNBC had a heated discussion yesterday arount 10:00 am between a dem and a rep. I can not find it on their website and can not find anyone that saw it. The dem said even if it is net it will only effect 40% of small businesses. The rep said no 80%. Sure would like to have seen that interview and hear more concrete information on that subject. Obama has way too many things he is not telling us. That one would kill a large segment of the folks that create jobs out there. The employees need to realize if the business can not stay in business they do not have jobs.

CC Please reasearch a disturbing piece of info. There are HUGE blocks of money positioning in the USA to buy up what's left of the middle(working) class assets. They want to buy huge numbers of forclosed homes when the prices come down some more. This will accelerate the transfer of wealth from the middle class to the wealthy. Our monetary system has a major flaw. The M-1 money supply grows from the introduction of debt to the economy. The middle class uses debt to buy things, like a house or car. The wealthy have cash for those things, so they use debt differently. They buy rental houses, businesses and margin stock. The long term result is that debt is pooling with the middle class. and cash and assets are polling with the wealthy and the economy is locking up. The wealthy will buy up the middle class assets at a faster rate as time goes on. If you look at Europe or Mexico you will see the end result.....

My concern is that there will be a societal meltdown due to the economic and energy problems, and violent crime will become rampant. Desperate people do desperate things. What happened in Argentina, where the economy collapsed and crime took over, could happen here. If you push people far enough, they will do whatever they need to to take care of themselves and their families--even if it means waging war on you and your family. This could happen here, in the United States of America.
Scared American
Obama scares me. He's been lying about significant issues for years, he is supporting radical orginizations. He wants to do away with the secret ballot for union members. He is working for some evil people. He has an agenda that scares me to death. He preying on the lowerclass making them believe that he is going to save them just to get their vote. Who REALLY is Barack Obama??????

I read some of the things that the Dems.want to pass through the minute they can.And one of them is Banning offshore drilling,Do they not care about using our own natural resources? Do they not care we are being held hostage by "OPEC"? Do they not care what we have to pay for home heating/cooling prices/gas ?

What really worries me is that nothing has really been done to stop any of what has caused this or keep it from ever happening again. AND that the Obama, Reid and Pelosi communist regime will destroy what’s left of our republic in short order! The boy's across the river are back "cooking the books" and we will soon discover that the $700B is not enough - and guess what - the new leadership , with their government hands already in all our money, will just have to take the rest of what we have saved and shared once again with the greedy, lazy and stupid of this land. Us, our kids and our grandchildren will be poor and suffer for years to come!

I'm worried that Americans are sitting back, mad but not acting. When are we going to storm Washington and throw out our worthless elected officials? They have forgotten who they work for. We need change alright, less government, free markets and McCain as President. God help us.

Mr. Bronson's comments are - RIGHT ON! (Oct. 28,2:54). I am concerned about the future of course, we are moving from "One Nation Under God" to "A Nation Without God" and as such, we are doomed.

Obama and his worshipers...somewhere they all "drank the kool-aid" and are now seeing him as the "second coming." "In God We Trust," printed on our paper currency is going to be needed greatly come November 4th. I am doing laps on the beads praying that Obama is NOT elected...and I am not even Catholic.

What worries me most? The future president. Its reassuring to think that MCcain doesn't want to increase spending, isn't that exactly the problem we've had for the past 8 years? Obama keeps regurgitating his message about the failed policies of Bush, but wants tons in spending, like money grows on trees, and also...like money will solve all social ills. Wrong again. Socialism sounds very fair and just, the only problem with it, is that it doesn't work! Don't they have history classes at Harvard? We really need to reexamine the curriculum there, because after Bush (a proud Harvard graduate) and Obama, well, I don't see a very bright future ahead.

Liz on a serious note, we must face reality. Business went to Asia to get around the out of control unions and we many got rich here in America. Wages were about $2.00 a week and without proper light bulbs and then in America, poor families charged twenty times the cost of the product. So, a bunch moved to America to share the profits. Now here we are again, after the terrorists attacks, we all had to get cell phones and more computers to protect our families. Giuliani in New York made it possible to live in a walk up without doormen and be safe. The increase of two income families and more immigrants and we now have no jobs. THE ECONOMY WOULD BE FINE WITH JOBS. Since we now do not use the horse and carriage we must create more and have more jobs and much more accountability and so we need more accountants, more lawyers, and more IT to speak of a few. But, since I am an accountant, I am biased, since I would rather be working and earning. Laura Bush knows that reading is the core to understanding and education and it is extremely important and so necessary. The other day I baked a cake from scratch and that is something that I have not done since childhood. But with all of my cooking courses here in New York, it is quite pleasurable to cook, to say nothing of the times when my spouse would on and on about my delicious food. Frankly, to put oil and butter and onions in a pan with garlic and basil the entire building would think you could cook but Michael Pollan, the author, speaks about food in a most exciting and unusual way with The Botany of Desire and The Omnivore's Dilemma and a few more.

Liz this memo covers my worries including lack of understanding of mark to market in the grass roots. You remember Joe and Maria. You are great too and now I have missed the interview of Laura Bush a very favorite person of mine. To Joe Kernen et al: First I would like to give thanks to Maria Bartiroma for the great interview with McCain and Palin. Maria does incredibly good interviews as she is quietly reserved as it is apparent her guests respond positively. (Unlike another short blond who dares and the other who is sly). THIS Memo IS ABOUT MARK TO MARKET Succinctly: Steinway Piano, good used 1098 upright $8,000, now on ebay for $1500 and no buyers. Versus, a rebuilt IBM executive original cost approx $1,000 and sold for $300. Purely analytical, a Steinway is difficult to move and store and if you have a knack for music a key board could suffice temporarily. Versus, a used IBM Exec knocks out a very professional paper or report. This is of course ancient history but is used to explain the necessity of recognizing mark to market. If you are starving, you cannot liquidate a piano, whereby a typewriter could enhance college papers and business letters. As with a "Russian Sable" one would take it off the market and not realize a loss. Mark to market is a mgmt tool and necessary in decision making and clarity. A puffed down coat will keep you warm or perhaps your mother's russian sable so to speak. In summation, settlement each day results in a gain or a loss and there are 365 days in a year basically. We All love the market. Great Show - Great Show Like that comment too on Charlie G no more "campers" and "go girl" My deceased spouse sold an old Cadillac convertible in seven years and said that someone loves this model and will pay the price and he got his $10,000 patiently. My id theft really taught me discipline and control; wrecked my credit and character very long ago. Today is a new day. Michelle Liz, Just wanted to share a comment I wrote to Joe and Mark regarding MARK TO MARKET because without proper accounting systems, no one will count. I am experiencing a lot of shrinkage and only noticed this when I had to tighten the budget and was quite surprised at the results but it is entirely confidential so won't print that part. I wrote one comment and now this computer is mal functioning again so I cannot respond and had to take an alternate route. My id theft really taught me discipline and control; wrecked my credit and character very long ago. Today is a new day. Michelle Look, Just a minute ago, I sent a comment to Joe Kernen; just did the same thing and now my computer is malfunctioning. Sarah Palin buys her clothes second hand to recycle. Of course if you are thinking theft and rip off, think of H & M.....highly styled and made so quickly that one cannot have a chance to steal the designs. Or, Ralph Lauren with good taste and excellent cutting and sewing (cutting and sewing as good as my french grandmother who could even make quilts by hand with scraps from wedding dresses to recycle and not to waste). People copy clothing if they cannot design it. Well, I remember the famous Bubblegum pink cotten tie made by Ralph Lauren for men.....I have made by hand men's ties, and it was so chic that I bought one for myself on sale and wore it with a grey and white polyester three piece suit. At J Crew, they have a lot of things including good fleese. With the cheap cost of clothing, perhaps we should not be paying fifty thousand dollars a year on college tuition. Better yet, perhaps one could gain a profit from selling one's clothing with a household name. LETS BE CERTAIN: I MADE ALL MY OWN CLOTHES AND AN A SHAPE SKIRT OF A COMMON FABRIC ON THE BIAS IS ABOUT A YARD AND A HALF OF 36 INCH OR A YARD OF SIXTY INCH AND SO ON A RAMNANT IS WORTH ABOUT TEN DOLLARS MAXIMUM; PLUS A ZIPPER, THREAD AND EITHER A SEWING MACHINE OR BY HAND PLUS THE LABOR COST. NO THIS IS CAPITALISM IN THE GRASS ROOTS. FRANKLY, I AM BUYING AND SPENDING NOTHING SINCE JOBS ARE SCARCE. I AM AN ACCOUNTANT, HAVE PASSED THE CPA EXAM AND WEARING GOOD VINTAGE CLASSIC CLOTHES THAT ARE CLEAN AND NEAT AND CONSERVATIVE. SORRY, ACCOUNTANTS LOOK AT THE VERY REAL VALUE. IN A HUNDRED YEARS I GUESS A STEINWAY PIANO WOULD BE WORTH MORE THAT A IBM EXECUTIVE TYPEWRITER REBUILT. SO WHAT IS THE POINT: TYPING. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT TYPING AT A HUNDRED WORDS A MINUTE AT AGE SEVENTEEN WITHOUT CORRECTIONS AND FOR CARBON COPIES WOULD EVERY HAVE A VALUE. WELL, ON THE COMPUTER, WE TYPE AND CALCULATE AND WITH EXCEL CAN DO A VERY LOT OF THINGS VERY EASILY, HOWEVER, THINGS THAT ARE WRONG AND THINGS THAT ARE RIGHT. I CHOSE ACCOUNTING AND THE CPA EXAM RATHER THAN THE COMPUTER PROCESSING AT THE 286 STAGE WHICH IS NOW DEFUNCT. WITHOUT ACCOUNTING DISCIPLINE, YOU WILL NEVER KNOW IF THE COMPUTER IS RIGHT OR WRONG. ALSO ENCHANCED ACCOUNTING IS WRITING AND UNDERSTANDING FACT FROM OPINION AND BIAS, AND STATISTICS WHICH GIVES YOU AN ANSWER WELL IN ADVANCE OF THE FACT AND THE PROOF. WE NEED A LOT OF DIVERSIFIED LEADERS SUCH AS THE FEDERAL RESERVE AND THE PRESIDENT AND BANKING AND WITH LOTS AND LOTS OF ACCOUNTANTS AND LAWYERS AND IT PROFESSIONALS TO HELP TO MAKE EVERYTHING WORK. ON ANOTHER NOTE, I DID NOT BECOME A FASHION DESIGNER AS I FIGURED MY PATTERNS WOULD BE COPIED BEFORE I GOT THEM TO MARKET; THAT IS WHY I JUST LOVE H & M AND OTHERS WHO UNDERSTAND THE MARKET AND FASHION, AND WHY I AM AN ACCOUNTANT. NOT TO BORE YOU BUT WHEN THE COMPUTER IS UNRELIABLE AND MAL FUNCTIONS, I GET DISGUSTED AND REMEMBER THAT WHEN BILL GATES STARTED BUSINESS, HE USED A LEDGER AND A PENCIL TO COUNT HIS MONEY. JOHN MCCAIN AND SARAH PALIN BOTH UNDERSTAND COST AND VALUE AND UNDERSTAND THE BUDGET PROCESS AND ACCOUNTABILITY AND TO "WASTE NOT WANT NOT". REMEMBER MATH OF FINANCE, THE PROFIT WAS MADE AT THE EIGHTH DECIMAL PLACE. JUST THINK OF A HUNDRED MILLION PENNIES OR BETTER YET THINK OF A MILLION QUARTERS AND YOU HAVE YOUSELF $250,000. GREAT SHOW ON SQUAWK WHAT WORRIES ME THE MOST RIGHT NOW IS THE MIX BUT I GUESS IT IS ABOUT TIME I READ A BOOK I STARTED: Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of the Crowds. AND FOR A QUICK READ WITH A HARD HITTING IMPACT, THE RUN AWAY BUS BY JOHN STEINBECK. I read a lot of Steinbeck to understand POVERTY. ANOTHER EXCELLENT ONE IS THE TORTILLA FLAT AND PIPIN THE FOURTH. THEY ARE RIGHT ON ABOUT THE ECONOMY. MY MOTHER TOLD ME A GREAT DEAL ABOUT DAIRY FARMERS AND THE DEPRESSION. WE ATE FRUIT IN SEASON, MADE OUR OWN CLOTHES, AND MY FATHER RESOLED OUR SADDLES ON HIS SHOE LAST, AND GREW HIS FRUIT TREES, AND GRAMMA PLANTED HER SWEET PEAS AND KEPT A VEGETABLE GARDEN, DESIGNED CLOTHES FROM SCRAPS AND MADE A PAIR OF BERMUDA SHORTS FOR A SIBLING TO REPLACE SHORTS. ALSO OLD FRENCH GRAMMA KNITTED AND WALL PAPERED AND ROCKED IN HER ROCKER AND MOST OF ALL I REMEMBER SHE NEVER RAISED HER VOICE PAST A SLIGHT MURMUR; GRAMPA WORKED ON AIRLINE ENGINES AND KEPT A PICTURE OF A SILVER AIRPLANE IN THE LIVING ROOM WITH HIS PICTURE TOO. THESE ARE NOSTALGIC TIMES BUT BASICALLY ALL ABOUT HUMANITY AS IN MAD MEN AND OTHERS. WHEN MY SPOUSE WAS DYING I REMINDED HIM HE WOULD NOT NEED A CAR IN HEAVEN SO WITHOUT THE CAR PERK WE COULD GET ALONG QUITE WELL HERE ON EARTH. THE NATURE OF LIFE IS THAT IT IS TOUGH BUT WITH PROPER UNDERSTANDING OF SELF AND OTHERS IT IS REALLY GREAT AND WITH MEASUREMENT THERE IS REALITY. I AM WORRIED WE SPEND TO MUCH MONEY COUNTING MONEY AND NOW WE SEEM TO HAVE A LOT LESS. I LOST SOME IN WASHINGTON MUTUAL AND OF COURSE THE FELONS IN MY ID THEFT, AS GREENSPAN JUST STATED, WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THIS CREDIT TSUMANI SITUATION AND ME WITHOUT A JOB ANOTHER TSUMANI. Then there is 740 Park Avenue Book and look carefully at that mighty inflation. Next thing you know, planting weed will be legal; after all in the 1800's people were drinking hard liquor for breakfast. Yes, Liz, for all the joy of living, I am plenty worried about the entire earth, let alone the stock market and money. Yes, Liz, for all the joy of living, I am plenty worried about the entire earth, let alone the stock market and money. Time for the personality of "Draper on Mad Men" Calm, quiet, collected and constantly worried about everything and handsome and tender too. The last comment on "the contract" was really cool. I really loved all my law classes. Law 101, Contracts at Baruch College and my professor was worried about his job, said that if Louie Lefkowitz doesn't get into office, he will lose his job; he taught a great class. The most important item I recall was that law originated to help and protect "poor widows and children" who are more vulnerable to the basic ramifications of contracts. Other PhD's at Baruch said the same thing, wrote books to try to hold their jobs and get tenure. Do we live in a rat race or what. Times are really tough. What worries me most is how far our nation has drifted, we are no longer "One nation under God". We are definitely two nations. Extreme liberal view points that seem to be running our Congress scare me most. Our freedoms, capitalism, having to wait years to have a surgery in a socialist healthcare environment, retirement, our morals as a society and treating people with respect concern me also.

Concerned about the incompetents in congress and the boobs in the senate.hussein obama is a even worse than Jimmy Cater if electef. pelosi, reid, kemmedy, framk, boxer and their croomies sent packing home and live on the inome they us to live under-- social security, etc. If they got paid commission-none of them would survive-liars and phonies.
Mary in NY
The government getting too much power. Now I hear about some loopy idea the Socialist Democrats have to take all the 401K money and mandate us to continue to contribute! Yikes. Where can one go these days to get away from these people? I was seriously thinking Australia.

I WORRIED THAT MR. OBAMA IS NOT THE SAVIOR HE IS PORTRAYED. I AM AFRAID HIS ECONOMIC, DOMESTIC, AND WORLD VIEW IS FAULTY. I AM 65 YRS OLD, RETIRED MILITARY AND SOON RETIRED PERIOD, AND I AM VERY WORRIED ABOUT AMERICA'S FUTURE WITH A VERY LEFT CONGRESS, UNRELIABLE BUSINESS LEADERS (CHEATS) AND NATIONALLY (ACTUALLY WORLDWIDE) LOOSE MORALES/STANDARDS. EVERWHERE I HAVE HAVE WORKED I HAVE HAD TO TAKE A DRUG TEST AND THEN BEEN RANDOMLY TESTED AFTERWARD. I REALLY THINK GIVING A GOVERMENT CHECK TO ANYONE WHO IS NOT REQUIRED TO DRUG TEST IS MORALLY WRONG SINCE I HAVE TO TAKE ONE TO EARN THE MONEY TO PAY FOR THEIR CHECK. THANKS, GENE

The fact that you wouldn't post my previous reply. Well, yes. You all studied economics, surely you knew something about cycles and waves and all that stuff (I don't presume) but who did you interview day after day but somebody who just made a killing or some wallstreet slicker or some glassy-eyed congressbeast (you know the way they look when asking "hard" questions they don't understand of econ feds who look somber and reply with non-sequiturs looking enigmatic). Where were the theorists? Where did you present overall understanding of a complicated system? And where were your efforts to sound the alarm? You are the Fourth Estate (Wikipedia: Edmund Burke, looking up at the Press Gallery of the House of Commons, said, 'Yonder sits the Fourth Estate, and they are more important than them all.') It is your JOB AS ECONOMIC ANALYSTS to understand what is going on and report it. (I don’t charge FOXBUSINESS with failure to report the political news -- I’ll get them later.) A decline was coming anyway, it was exacerbated by Congressional manipulation of market rules and regulations to further partisan (personal?) goals which has tipped the problem and now we’re going into an unprecedented political as well as economic crisis, I will say that FOX has been more truthful than other MSM, but nevertheless still pretends that everything is going to be the way it used to be. It ain’t so.

Is the government going to tax what I have accumulated and redistribute? This will break the centuries-old slogan of "the American dream", which is and opportunity to work hard and prosper. I have worked very hard and been very diligent with my financial discipline.

I fully agree with the responsability comment, I believe we need the statue of responsability on the west caost and the statue of liberty on the east.

i am so tired of the negetive spin put on everything good or bad. i found myself on a emotional rollercaoster while watching you. of corse you nees ratings yet there must be another way. thank you for your time

Liz, Worry is not a biggy with me, for to worry is to cause harm to one's self. Financial problems are pretty much cyclical, the old law, what goes up must come down, it's as true as the law of gravity. What very much concerns me is the way the country is turning, from a caring, loving, how can I help mentality to what's in it for me. We are becoming a self centered, to hell with you society. The leadership in Washington is I believe to blame, feathering my own nest is most important, and that has trickled down into Wall and Broad and to a generation of me first. What's wrong is our center has been corrupted which corrupts everything else, until that changes, it'll only get worse.
