Ekstrom returns to the area after seven years in the United Kingdom. After graduating from high school, Ekstrom attended Purdue Calumet. She moved to England in 1993 and attended the University of Liverpool.

She graduated with honors in 1998, then spent two years in practice in England.

RESTAURANTS Phil Smidt’s in Gourmet Gourmet, The Magazine For Good Living, has selected Phil Smidt’s restaurant of Hammond for its October feature, “America’s Best Restaurants 2000.” The restaurant is at 1205 N. Calumet Ave. in Hammond.

The collector’s edition of Gourmet, known for its authoritative word on dining out, annually seeks out the best of the best across the nation. This year 180 restaurants were selected. Of those, nine were from the Chicago area.

In May, Phil Schmidt’s was named by USA Today as “Indiana’s Great Plate” in an article, “The Fifty Great Plates of America.” The restaurant was also featured in the March 1999 issue of Travel and Leisure magazine, in the article “The Absolute Best Restaurants in Chicago.” FINANCE Investment seminar set Corey Dillon, regional sales director from Janus Capital Corp. in Denver, will be featured guest speaker at an investments seminar Nov. 14 held by R.B. Smith Co. Inc., located at 554 Vale Park Road in Valparaiso.

The seminar will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Opera House. Dillon will discuss the Janus management style and the company’s success as one of the top mutual fund management firms in the country.
